Mani Monday: Barb Wire French Manicure

I used to spend hundreds of dollars at Sakura Nail Spa in New York City getting my clear to black gradation Calgel with Diamond manicure, but then I moved to Los Angeles and stopped my Calgel addiction cold turkey. The above black French with tinsel glitter on top (which I call Barb Wire)? DIY!

When I received my Zoya Ornate Holiday 2012 glitter nail polish collection in the mail, I immediately got flashbacks of my beloved Calgel black ombré manicure. The tiny crushed glitter in the black Storm polish and larger holographic silver fleck in Electra in this nail polish set were perfect for recreating that Diamond gradation look.

I didn’t have a tiny brush to apply Storm, so I cut up an old makeup wedge sponge and dabbed the polish on my tips. I prefer an oval shape for this type of manicure. I think it looks more feminine and elegant—squoval or square (the worst!) French manicures veer way too quickly into tacky territory. Here’s a breakdown of what I used:

1. O.P.I. Original Nail Envy as a basecoat

2. Zoya Nail Polish in Storm sponged on tips

3. Zoya Nail Polish in Electra painted on tips

4. CND Air Dry topcoat

Can’t wait to try out the other colors in the Zoya Ornate collection for more festive fingers and toes!
